The Irish national anthem Amhrán na bhFiann isn’t usually cited as a source of style inspiration but Paul Galvin has revealed that the lyrics not only inspired the name of his debut collection Vanguard with Dunnes Stores but several of the pieces in it.
The name Vanguard was chosen by Paul to capture the spirit of the vanguard warriors, the risk takers, who led military movements from the front.
‘This is not so much a clothing collection as a clothing movement. It represents new thoughts, new language, and hopefully a new direction for menswear in Ireland,’ he said.
Comprising of 21 pieces, the Vanguard aesthetic is true to the Kerry footballer’s personal look but it’s not a replica of his own wardrobe staples.
Instead it’s a carefully designed conceptual collection where army apparel influences are seen via the use of khaki, on-trend bomber jackets, zipper details, crew necks and shearling.
Layering is also a key feature of the collection with mock sleeved hoods and t-shirts and drop crotch joggers giving sportswear inspired pieces a luxe, high fashion feel.
And the fabrics – peached and carbonised cotton, crisp oxfords for shirting and ultra-durable nylons for outerwear add to the utilitarian vibe.
The lyrics of the national anthem also present themselves on t-shirts and sweatshirts.
WARRIORS ARE WE (Sinne Fianna Fáil) and SWORN TO BE FREE (Fé mhóid bheith saor) are the two translated lines printed on several pieces.
Urban, on-trend and hugely influenced by the sports luxe movement, this collection won’t appeal to the older Dunnes Stores customer.
But it is almost guaranteed to draw a younger, more style conscious shopper to the iconic Irish department store, whether they’re a fan of Galvin on the field or not.
Vanguard by Paul Galvin exclusively at Dunnes Stores is available to buy online at www.dunnesstores.com and in selected stores nationwide.
