Best souvenirs of Ireland?

I found an Ireland travel website on about.com that listed the 10 best souvenirs to pick up in Ireland. I would like to get some feedback from others about their opinion and where we might find other unique items. If I want to go find some interesting locally made art, espcially ceramics--not Baleek (which isn't on that list), are there uniquely Irish styles to watch for?

1. Aran Sweaters

2. Crystal

3. Tweeds

4. Linen

5. Parian China

6. Whiskey and Other Spirits

7. Fishing Tackle

8. Irish Music and DVDs

9. Smoked Salmon

10. And Finally ... A Piece of the Auld Sod!

You can actually get pieces of turf to burn at home, pre-packed for your convenience and transatlantic shipment - look beside the shamrock seeds in souvenir stores. If you do not have an open fire a miniature porcelain cottage with special turf pellets might be an alternative. You light the pellet and it lets off smoke through the cottage's tiny chimney. Corny, but also very popular.

Are you planning to head up to Dingle whilst you're in/around Killarney (I have got that right? you're staying in Beaufort this summer??). If so, head to Green Street, where you'll find one of my favourite shops:

NUGoldsmith.

I had a very enjoyable chat with Niamh on my visit to Dingle last week. She only ever makes one of anything. There may be a similar "theme" running through several of her pieces, but once she's exhausted ideas for those, she moves on to create something completely different. Prices start at approx €120 for silver/gold ear-rings, and rise:

Also in Green Street, you'll find Dingle crystal (my favourite), Lisbeth Mulcahy, Brian de Staic Jewellery, and John Weldon Jewellery. Also a couple of art galleries (apologies, have forgotten their names!!):

And in Main Street, you'll find other craft shops, and Holden Leather Goods - such gorgeous colours:

None of the above are particularly cheap, but they are all designed and crafted on Dingle Peninsula.

Now, how did I miss gleeson goldsmiths when in co. Clare in April??? LOVE the designs! Mind you, bet my husband's glad I did :-)))

I meant to say:

"If I want to find some interesting locally made art, especially ceramics (not Baleek), are there uniquely Irish styles to watch for?"

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, it looks like many of the quoted studio websites show some fairly hefty prices. Here in the US, *sometimes* we can find competitive pricing when the artists set up in open air markets. Are there such craft/art markets in Ireland in the summer? I am from Ann Arbor, MI area, so I am thinking of the Ann Arbor Art Fair that takes over the city streets for a few weeks in July.

Love the idea of looking over the Kerry Woolen Mills products and hope to see their mill really close to us in Beaufort--not sure if they will accept visitors though.

Yes, will definitely be exploring Dingle and/or Beara peninsulas as well as East/West Clare Co. and Might head down to Cobh. My husband is taking the train one day with our kids to Dublin, returning to Killarney that night. He is an avocational artist working in Caligraphy, watercolor and now experimenting with combining these formats with wood block printing. He'll be going to see Book of Kells of course. However, I wonder if there are similar artists in W. Ireland displaying their art, not just in Dublin?

So much to consider. I am usually very vulnerable to the jewelry counter in shops however--especially local stones/gems. It is also easy to pack. That will definitely be on my radar as I scope out the retail scene!

DoT,

Sundays from 10.30 am to 6.30 pm in Merrion Square in the center of Dublin, there is a free, open-air, Art Exhibition where you can meet and talk to the artists as well as look at their work. Open year round:

I like to get a piece of Celtic design jewelry-not too expensive esp. in silver. I also bring back tea bags, biscuits(cookies) and candy for myself-and sometimes others if I'm feeling generous. I've heard Waterford has gone out of business. If it's true a piece would be a good investment.

It's hard to find a true hand knit sweater anymore, most are made on machines-so be sure to inquire about that. There are some fabulous young Irish designers, making really unique sweaters and jackets that are not super expensive.

A good place to buy in the West is Foxford Mills in Foxford-(Mayo)they also have a store in Westport and maybe in Galway.

Happy Travels.

Waterford has gone out of business? Is this true? We are coming next year and that was going to be one of our stops. I have several waterford pieces and I was going to add to it! Please, tell me it isn't true.
