Can a Bracelet Really Keep You Safe?

These new products claim to help protect women from sexual assault.

Chantal Adair

"Polly Mosendz is having an emergency."

Two of my friends got this text on a recent Thursday night, as well a link to a profile I had created that included a selfie, emergency contacts, medical conditions, and insurance information. It also gave them my location.

I was not actually having an emergency. Rather, I was at a bar testing out Stiletto, a lightweight, technologically enhanced pendant that is supposed to keep me safe. It had taken about five minutes to set up the profile, though I happen to keep my insurance card handy and have only one allergy. Plus, I had a lot of selfies to pick from on my camera roll.

I was wearing the pendant on my wrist and had double-clicked the center to set off the notification.

"If you fall down and your leg hurts, press twice. If you fall down, look at your leg, and it's broken, press three times," Daniel Gladstone, co-founder of Stiletto, had explained. (Pressing three times alerts 911.)

Sexual assault has been in the news a lot over the past year. According to a recent CDC report, one in five U.S. women has been raped at some point in her life, a staggering statistic that's getting more and more attention. In May the Department of Education announced aninvestigation into Title IX violations at 55 universities across the country, a list that has only grown since then, and in September the administration unveiled its new"It's on Us" campaign spreading the message that it's everyone's responsibility to keep men and women safe from sexual assault. Later that month, California Governor Jerry Brown signed the nation's first"yes means yes" affirmative consent law for colleges, which requires "an affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity."

I had the exclusive opportunity to try out Stiletto in its first trial with a media outlet, but it's just one of many in-the-works products intended to combine self-defense and style. Undercover Colors, a nail polish designed to change color when the nail is dipped into a drink laced with date rape drugs, is being billed as "the first fashion company empowering women to prevent sexual assault," and when it was announced this summer, the idea received both praise (for taking on this issue) and criticism (for placing the responsibility on potential victims, rather than on perpetrators). The four undergrads at North Carolina State University who invented it haven't announced a launch date, but when Cosmopolitan.comwrote about it in August, the article was shared on Facebook more than 18,000 times.

Michael Kisch, CEO of wearable technology firmSoundhawk, says wearables have gained traction of the past year due to the emerging idea of technology as fashion. "The very nature of wearables, because they are on the body, there is an expectation that they need to be more fashionable, more stylish, and more unique to the individual," Kisch said. "There need to be partnerships between technology and design houses, like what Fitbit did with Tory Burch." (Tory Burch designed a custom Fitbit bracelet and necklace, in her signature style.) Fitbit gained more than 50 percent of the wearable market with2.7 million units sold in the first quarter of 2014.

Something that looks like Lindsay Lohan's alcohol monitoring anklet isn't exactly cool.

"There was a cultural shift around the acceptance of carrying a mobile devices. In the '80s and '90s there was a stigma with people carrying the device," Kisch said. "Now it is normal to have technology on your hand all the time. Wearables are going through the same process. We now see Apple with this major smartwatch. You're going to see over the next few years, wearable will tackle problems it before didn't have a role in, like personal security."

A group of six current and former University of Washington students is working on designing a unisex braceletcalled VIVE that will help the wearer track his or her alcohol consumption and stay in touch with friends. Gwenyth Hardiman, one of the founders, explains that the band vibrates to check in with the wearer at intervals as "a cue for the wearer to check in with themselves, on their mental state and surroundings."

Cuff smart jewelry.

"If everything's cool, they squeeze the band to dismiss the check-in," she says. "If everything isn't cool — if they're uncomfortable with something or someone, or they're unable to dismiss the check-in because they're too drunk or for any other reason — their designated friend group is alerted." Users who want to get ahold of friends can also hold the band for three seconds to send an alert, which triggers a vibration on the VIVE bands of the group members and sends them the location of the distressed friend.

Because VIVE is meant to be unisex, the team wants to make sure it's appealing to both genders. "We didn't want to fall into the stereotype of labeling men perpetrators and women victims," Hardiman explains, adding that the team wants it to be subtle and easy to wear because "something that looks like Lindsay Lohan's alcohol monitoring anklet isn't exactly cool."

Meanwhile, Cuff, another jewelry company with a goal of protecting wearers, has already presold more than 20,000 devices and will beginning shipping in March, thanks to a major publicity push when the concept launched. (Cuff has been featured by Wired, Elle, the New York Times, Good Morning America, and many more.)

Founder Deepa Sood worked previously asvice president of product development at Restoration Hardware, but one night she was at dinner with friends, fiddling with her Nike+ Fuelband and other bracelets when she had an idea for a "merger of fashion and function."

"I wanted to reimagine what personal safety looks like and give it more dignity," she says, as opposed to older versions of this product, like Lifelock.

Her line of bracelets, necklaces, and key chains range from $59 for the simple cuff to $349 for the style package, which includes four bracelet options, a necklace, and a jewelry box charger. All the options come with embedded technology that can monitor your location and send and receive mobile notifications. They also include a microphone in case you need a friend to hear you in an emergency situation. Sood says large fashion brands are reaching out to her to incorporate her product, though she couldn't offer details as the collaborations are still under wraps. She would only say that the technology might appear in items like jeans and handbags.

The author wears the Stiletto pendant as a necklace on a night out.
Chantal Adair

As for Stiletto, Daniel Gladstone was inspired to create a prevention product after a close family member was sexually assaulted. He combined his experience in the marketing industry with his brother Alex's work in the GPS and telecommunication world to establish the startup Secure Couture and its product Stiletto, which costs $179. The brothers have a manufacturing goal of March 2015 and hope to sell as many as 2,500 units in the coming months.

"We have received preorders from all 50 states, from women buying for themselves, husbands buying for their wives, and parents buying for their college-bound daughters," Gladstone says.

Daniel and Alex Gladstone joined me on my night at the bar. I still mingled with friends and strangers as I normally would, but they helped simulate calls to 911 since I didn't want to actually call the police. I wondered if wearers might accidentally set off the pendant, prompting an unnecessary call to the police, but you have to press it three times quickly to activate it, making this feature nearly impossible to set off without meaning to. I tried for several hours to make it go off, hitting it against tables and wobbling it around in my pocket, and nothing happened. But Alex Gladstone showed me what would happen if I activated it: 911 would see my profile and be able to hear my voice through a hidden microphone. I could scream, speak, or just try to offer more information to the operator without being detected by my attacker — something like, "Stop attacking me in this bar, I'm going to run downstairs."

Over the course of the night, I was pretty rough on Stiletto. I banged it against the bar, spilled a bit of my drink on it (it's water-resistant), and jingled my wrist a lot more than a regular bar patron might. After the end of the night, it came out just fine, though my wrist was pretty tired. And despite the fact that I fiddled with it a lot and wore it on my necklace at one point, no one at the bar paid attention to it.

Will products like these really make a difference? Debby Tucker, executive director of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence, has worked with legislators and businesses, including Stiletto, to help develop an understanding of what women need in the fight against sexual assault.

"It is another strategy to help victims try to avoid perpetrators and to protect themselves, which is a good thing," Tucker says of the defense products. "On the other hand, we keep working so hard at that instead of stopping people from doing awful things like this in the first place."

Taking steps to protect yourself doesn't change who is actually responsible.

Tucker advocates for education for all, starting from a young age, but she also says there are some men with severe mental illness "who adopt these behaviors and use them in relationships, no matter what."

"Nothing we do in the way of education, or even confinement, can resolve this behavior for them," she says.

For protection against those who are beyond changing their ways, Tucker believes these products are an ideal line of defense.

"I don't think that having these products available and encouraging women, and others, changes at all who is responsible for sexual assault. It is being marketed to women because they are more likely to be the subject of a sexual assault and other kinds of attack," she says. "Taking steps to protect yourself doesn't change who is actually responsible."

Though Daniel Gladstone supports the idea of education, he doesn't think it's enough and says that's why his product is so vital. "We can educate people from the age of 3 that they shouldn't murder people, but there are people that are sick or twisted who will perpetrate these crimes," he says. "We developed this technology not because education isn't important, but in case this education fails."

Sood puts it another way: "There's nothing wrong with people feeling safer."
